Accessing Dartmoor with Bespoke Bike Hire

September 26, 2026 |

We were very pleased to award a grant from our Public Access Fund to Plymouth Bespoke Cycling, a group of volunteers who promote and lead cycle rides for those that might otherwise be excluded.
As well as two wheeled bikes, the group offer the use of recumbent trikes, which offer an inclusive option allowing those with different physical abilities to comfortably take part. The stable nature of these trikes, plus their low centre of gravity, mean that a broad range of cyclists can join in with social cycling experiences and benefit from exercise out in nature.

Plymouth Bespoke Cycling’s volunteer team, consisting of 6-10 British Cycling-trained Ride Leaders, Guides and Coaches, manage all aspects of the Bespoke Bike Hire project. These volunteers bring professional expertise, genuine passion for community inclusion, and deep commitment to making Dartmoor accessible to everyone and Plymouth Bike Hire provides operational support and facilities at Coypool Park and Ride. The DPA grant money will fund subsidised ride vouchers, meaning a day of guided accessible bike hire, which normally costs £30, can be booked for just £2.50.

All rides depart from Coypool Park and Ride and follow the Plym Valley Trail, Which provides safe, traffic free access to Dartmoor’s fringes. Typical destinations include Burrator Reservoir, Cadover Bridge, and various South Dartmoor tors and locations These carefully chosen route ensures accessibility While delivering genuine connection to the Dartmoor landscape.

At a recent community partner drop in session, we had the chance to meet mastermind Andrew Thompson, and some of his volunteers, in person. DPA Comms Officer Helen tested out one of the accessible recumbent trikes on a short ride and learned how Public Access Fund money is allowing people to enjoy exploring Dartmoor all day by bike. Andrew shared plans to expand current routes on Dartmoor and he and his team are currently testing out new carparks and routes for day trips onto the moor with groups of ten.

Dominic Vigni, from Plymouth Bespoke Bike Hire, told us: ‘This initiative directly aligns with the DPA’S mission to remove barriers to accessing Dartmoor. By eliminating the financial obstacle, we enable people Who feel excluded from outdoor recreation to build meaningful connections with the landscape. Research consistently shows that nature connection improves physical health, mental wellbeing, and social cohesion—particularly for older adults and isolated individuals. Beyond individual wellbeing, this project creates future stewards of Dartmoor. People Who experience the landscape’s beauty and significance become invested in its protection. Our participants—many of whom have never accessed Dartmoor before—Will develop genuine care for this special place and become advocates for its preservation.’

We’re keen to support access, in the broadest sense, through local grass-roots projects such as this, and we’re delighted that our grant will mean that people can benefit from free and subsided bike hire, including the use of the fantastic recumbent trikes.
